There’s no shortage of home security cameras available at this point, with the segment having really matured over the last couple of years. As such, it’s not surprising to find new entrants struggling to make a dent. Somehow, that doesn’t seem like it will be a problem for the Eufy EverCam.

Yes, it’s another home security camera that’s connected to the internet, which also happens to come with smart features like being able to distinguish between people and animals. While that sounds pretty mundane at this point, the fact that it’s coming in at such a late time means they are able to address issues that have continually come up with previous products in the category.

Chief among the Eufy EverCam’s main advantages is the easy setup. To install it, you simply attach the mounting dock to the exact spot you want (it has an adhesive backing) and snap the actual camera on it, which attaches securely via magnets. That’s it. No fiddling with any electrical wiring and mounting hardware necessary, allowing anyone to easily install the camera without any hassles. We know, it’s not the first security cam to use an onboard battery for power. It is, however, the first to house a battery that can keep it running for up to a full year on a single charge, so you don’t have to remove the camera every couple months or so for plugging in to an outlet.

According to Eufy, they’ve optimized the camera’s image recognition technology such that they can guarantee it will provide 95 percent fewer false alarms than other security cameras in the market. That means, better recognition of animals and inanimate objects that trigger the motion detector, so you won’t have to check your live feed multiple times a day only to find nothing in the scene. You can also register the faces of trusted individuals (e.g. family and friends), so that it can bypass alerting you if one of those trusted people is the source of the motion.

The Eufy EverCam is equipped with a Sony Exmor sensor and a wide angle lens, allowing it to capture video footage in 1080p with a 140-degree field of view. Like any proper modern security cam, it’s fitted with night vision at a range of up to 33 feet, digital zoom up to 8x, and live streaming support over WI-Fi. All recording is saved with AES 128-bit encryption, so no need to worry about your feed being hacked.

An SD card slot allows you to store all footage locally, so you can keep your own backups without having to pay a monthly subscription, although they also offer cloud storage if that’s what you prefer for an extra $2.99 per month. The camera is IP66 weatherproof, by the way, so you can mount it both indoors and outdoors all throughout the year. Other features include a base station that processes all footage (it also holds the SD card), an integrated mic and speaker (for two-way communication), a 100-decibel siren that sounds off when it detects the camera being forcibly removed, and a backup battery on the base station that can keep it running for two days straight.

A Kickstarter campaign is currently running for the Eufy EverCam. You can reserve a unit for pledges starting at $219.
