It doesn’t matter what kind of bicycle you ride: at some point, you’re going to get a flat. And you’re going to need to use a pump to fill the tire back up with air. And while there’s no shortage of bike pumps available to cyclists, the guys behind Stompump think they have something people are going to find more useful.

Designed as a similarly compact alternative to hand pumps, CO2 inflators, and mini-pumps, it comes in a size similar to small water bottles, so you can bring it along during a ride without using up a whole lot of space in your pack. According to the outfit, it’s more convenient to use than hand pumps and mini-pumps since you can simply stomp on it like a pedal to get the pump action going, all while being safer and more economical than a CO2 inflator. It’s also quite fast, with the outfit claiming it can inflate a tire three times faster than a traditional hand pump.

The Stompump consists of a cylindrical-shaped body with a raised top that you stomp on in order to produce air. The stomping action means you don’t have to tire your arms at any point of filling up a tire, making it a particularly convenient way of performing fix-ups on the road. With a maximum pressure of 60 PSI, it can also pump more air per compression, making it both faster to use while being perfectly suited for any type of medium pressure tires. It’s compatible with both Presta and Schrader valve stems, so that should cover most types of tires, so you can use it not just for your bicycle, but for any medium pressure tire that requires inflating.

An integrated filter cleans the air before going through the air intake, so the pump’s internals remain free from dirt and debris, ensuring it requires minimal maintenance throughout its lifetime. Simply put, you can use this over and over without needing to clean the internals every couple of months. The whole thing is also easy to disassemble using just ordinary tools, making it easy to tinker with the pump in the event that any problems occur.

Unlike most portable pumps, the Stompump comes with a small storage compartment at the top that’s just big enough to hold a patch kit, repair plugs, or something similarly small. Construction is machined aluminum, so it’s both lightweight and strong, with stainless steel fittings to ensure the fasteners aren’t easily susceptible to rust.

Each one is bundled with a frame dock that mounts onto bottle cage bosses, allowing you to store the pump right on the bike’s frame while you ride, freeing up precious room in your bag. That makes it particularly convenient to stash during a ride, all while minimizing the chances you’ll ever forget it at home, since you can have it stay right on the bike’s frame the entire time it’s parked in your garage.

A Kickstarter campaign is currently running for the Stompump. You can reserve a unit for pledges starting at $79.
